Check the Forecast

You should regularly check the weather forecast when you plan on taking your vessel out on the water. If you check the forecast the night before, don’t forget to check in the morning too. Weather can drastically change without notice, so you need to try your best to stay on top of this in order to avoid rough conditions on the water. 

We suggest not solely relying on an app! Your surroundings can give you plenty of indicators or inclement weather on the horizon. Pay attention to cloud formations and wind conditions. You may even want to invest in a transmitter radio that will provide you with updates on the weather.

Slow Down and Use Your Lights

Once you enter rough conditions on your boat, you’ll probably want to retreat to the dock. Remain calm and remember that slow and steady wins the race. When you reduce your speed in rough conditions, you’ll have more reaction time. Reducing your speed will also decrease strain on the hull. If you position your craft at a 45 degree angle, you can lessen the impact of swells. Although this won’t keep you on the perfect path, it will keep you safe. If you have passengers on board during choppy waters, ask them to watch for any other crafts in the area.

Another important tip to keep in mind when in rough boating conditions is to use your navigational lights to increase visibility. Heavy downpours, instance fog, and choppy waters can decrease your visibility so it’s important to do what you can to maintain your sight.

Use Proper Safety Gear

Make sure you are wearing a life jacket whenever you’re on your vessel. This will keep you safe in the event that rough conditions send you overboard. Sit in the lowest part of the craft to avoid falling over. We also recommend investing in special gear including ponchos and hooded raincoats.
